Lix caught up with Pietro Aletti, a Business and Economics student at Erasmus University, who shared with us where to eat, drink, shop and be entertained in Rotterdam on a student budget. Check out his top three’s!

Where to eat?

Has Döner Kebab
West-Kruiskade 25B, 3014 AK Rotterdam, Netherlands

Students simply love Has Kebab and it’s easy to see why—prices range from 5-7 euros. And you won’t have any trouble spotting one—the chain can be found all over the city. So take your appetite with you and try their amazing shawarma, durum falafel or Turkish pizza. Trust me, you’ll leave happy!

Old Scuola
Achterklooster 1, 3011 RA Rotterdam, Netherlands

This is literally the best pizza joint in Rotterdam. In fact, it’s so good, you’ll think you’ve touched down in Italy. Try their homemade mozzarella—made fresh daily. And while the Margarita pizza is a must, for more experimental foodies, the San Daniele won’t disappoint. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Go check it out!

Ter Marsch & Co
Witte de Withstraat 70, 3012 BS Rotterdam, Netherlands

Defined by many as the best burger in town, Ter Marsch & Co aims to please. Winner of the Best Burger in the Netherlands (2015), you certainly won’t leave hungry. From Aged Rib Eye to Japanese Wagyu, the selection of quality beef is unmatched. But not to worry if you’re vegan—they haven’t forgotten about you. Be sure to check out the vegan coconut curry croquettes with green curry, ketchup Tom Yum and cassava chips. Yum!

Where to drink?

Eetcafé Concordia
Oostzeedijk 56B, 3063 BD Rotterdam, Netherlands

Don’t miss out on this classic student pub, minutes from uni. Lovely and cheap, Concordia is a place to meet up with old friends or make some new ones. From beer pong to burger challenges and live sports, Concordia’s got you covered. Check out their daily food specials and Wednesday and Saturday happy hour.

Locus Publicus
Oostzeedijk 364, 3063 CD Rotterdam, Netherlands

A student-friendly bar with student-friendly prices, Locus Publicus is the perfect place to start (or end) your night. Sample over 200 different beers in this authentic beer hall. And on chilly winter nights, cozy up next to the fireplace while listening to the locals chat it up.

BIRD
Raampoortstraat 24, 3032 AH Rotterdam, Netherlands

BIRD is a club, venue and restaurant in the city’s popular Hofbogen district. Here, you’ll find music for every taste—jazz, soul, funk, hip-hop and electronica. And when you get the munchies, their range of cuisine is just as vast as their music policy—from poke bowls to pizza.  BIRD is open from April to October. But don’t worry—there’s plenty of nightlife to get you through the other months—like techno clubs Bar, Toffler and Perron.

Where to shop?

TK Maxx
Binnenwegplein 27-29, 3012 KA Rotterdam, Netherlands

Get swag without breaking the bank. Head to TK Maxx for the latest fashion trends for a fraction of the cost. Located smack dab in the center of Rotterdam, you’ll find swag-worthy brand-name apparel, shoes and accessories, plus houseware to spruce up your flat.

LIDL
Slaak 36, 3061 CS Rotterdam, Netherlands

One of the worst parts of being a college student is how damn expensive groceries are. LIDL is the answer to your prayers, offering quality products at an affordable price. And it won’t be hard to find one—LIDL is literally sprinkled everywhere throughout the city, with at least 10 locations citywide.

Bol.com (online store)

If you’re more of a homebody, Bol.com is right up your alley. From the comfort of your couch, merch is just a click away. And for those that don’t know, Amazon isn’t available in the Netherlands, so Bol is the perfect substitute, providing free delivery for any and all items purchased.

Where to be entertained?

Kralingse Bos
Langepad 9, 3062 CJ Rotterdam, Netherlands

Voted the ‘Best Public Space in the Netherlands’ numerous times, the Kralingse Bos is a must for nature lovers. For the more active types, run, walk or skate through the park, or try your luck at sailing on the picturesque lake. And if you’re into climbing, head over to Climb Park Fun Forest, where you’ll find rope ladders, wiggle bridges and zip lines. Or just sit back, relax and people watch. There’s plenty of room for everyone!

Keukenhof (Tulip Garden)
Stationsweg 166A, 2161 AM Lisse, Netherlands

Known as the Garden of Europe, Keukenhof is one of the world’s largest flower gardens. Situated a bit outside of Rotterdam, in Lisse, it’s definitely worth the trip. Here, you’ll find approximately 7 million flowers, which covers an area of 32 hectares (whatever that means). Let’s just say, it’s a lot of tulips!

Kinderdijk Windmills
Nederwaard 1, 2961 AS Kinderdijk, Netherlands

Kinderdijk, just 15 kilometers from Rotterdam, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you’ll find 19 windmills that are heritage-listed. Not gonna lie—getting here is difficult, but it’s well worth the effort. And once here, you’ll see why it’s one of the most popular attractions in the Netherlands.
