5 Study Tips Every First-Year Tilburg University Student Should Know - 2 min read

What an exciting time. It’s the start of your first semester at Tilburg University. Your campus is flooded with thousands of new students from around the world who will be starting their first year at university. For many students (and their parents), transitioning to university is an exciting yet daunting experience. Questions are racking your brain: Will I fit in? How will I make new friends? Am I going to survive my crazy hard Microeconomics course? Lix sat down with Tilburg University student, Jody Rutjens, who shared five study tips to help first-year students succeed in and out of the classroom. Let’s dig in.

Lix: What is one thing about Tilburg University that every first-year student should know?

Jody: Tilburg University is one of the few universities in the Netherlands that has a Carnival break! This way, you can polonaise (dance) all day without worrying about your 8.45 lecture the next morning.

Lix: What has helped you survive a tough semester?

Jody: During stressful periods at university, it is important to make time for fun things with friends. In my experience, studying can get a bit lonely. Taking a break and talking with a friend about it over lunch or dinner has always helped me to relax!

Lix: What techniques do you use when studying for a big exam?

Jody: My advice is not to overdo it by spending 12 hours a day in the library. This will drain your energy and concentration and will make all that hard work counterproductive. Make sure to take periodic breaks—go for a walk, head to the gym or take a coffee break. Balance is key.

Lix: What do you recommend to students who are struggling to make friends at a new university?

Jody: Tilburg University has many different associations students can join if they’re looking to meet new people! Whether you are interested in joining a sports team, study group or student association, there is something for everyone.

Lix: What is the best advice you could give a first-year student?

Jody: Don’t forget to make the most out of your student life—these will probably be the best years of your life! Take full advantage of it.
